That is the sad part because these people end up with a yorkie puppy that did not turn out to be what they thought it would be. |

| A
Teacup Yorkshire Terrier or Miniature Yorkshire Terrier is just a
small Yorkshire Terrier. A lot of people like these size yorkies because
they are small and easy to sneak in stores. But caution must be used
when owning such a small Yorkshire Terrier. The teacup or miniature
Yorkshire Terrier can not jump on furniture, take long walks or sleep
with you because it could fall out of your bed and get injured. The
teacup Yorkshire Terrier or Miniature Yorkshire Terrier could also
have Hypoglicemia problems at first. And last but least you could
end up with a ton of veterinary bills due to health problems. |
| It
is low blood sugar, a sudden drop in the level of blood sugar in a
yorkshire terrier puppy. It can occur in many small breeds from the
weaning stage until around 4 months of age. Signs of Hypoglycemia
are a weakness, confusion, wobbly gait, frothing or drooling from
the mouth and sometimes seizure. The gums will be pale, almost a grayish
white in color rather than a healthy bright pink. The puppy can go
into shock and, if not cared for properly and promptly, may even die.
A puppy can be playing one second and in another can experience Hypoglycemia.
|
| Yorkie
puppies do not eat a lot at one time and can run out of fuel. Being
chilled, being handled to much, not getting naps and being stressed
are some of the reasons for Hypoglycemia. Yorkie puppies can have
reoccuring attacks of Hypoglycemia. Yorkie puppies MUST be feed several
times a day. One can not put food down for the yorkie puppy and walk
away. The yorkie puppys food intake must be monitored to make sure
it is eating each time it is fed. |

The first question I would ask is does this yorkie puppy come with
a health guarantee and for how long. Make sure you understand what
the breeder is going to guarantee for? Heart, Liver, Kidneys etc...
if you don't get a health guarantee from the breeder I would suggest
not to buy from him or her. |
| The first thing is to decide just how long you want the hair to be on your Yorkshire Terrier. The most important thing is to keep the yorkie clean and to make sure to brush it daily to keep it free from knots. I bath my yorkies once a week. We show people are slaves to our Yorkshire Terriers hair. We bath it, oil it and wrap it to protect it until the yorkie has earned its championship title. Having a Yorkshire Terrier as a pet one would not want to do all this extra work, but there are many people that don't show but like their yorkies to have long hair. The yorkie below just turned three and a half years of age and I can't bring myself to cut his hair off yet. At this time his hair is 16 inches long.
I have listed all of the products I use and why and where you can get them. The links are underlined below. Plush Puppy Natural Conditioning Shampoo - softens and adds shine specially for flowing coated breeds. (can be used on show coat or pets) Plush Puppy Silk Protein Conditioner - recommended for all coats that require softening or treatment for dehydration. Also reduces static electricity. Suitable for dogs with most skin problems. (can be used for show coat or pets) Neutrogena
body Oil the light sesame formula
you can buy this at Meijers or Walgreens. Or Plush
Puppy Seabreeze Oil - Both are Ultra Fine Coat Oils. (used
for show coat) Plush Puppy Swishy Coat - is a Coat manager for flowing coated breeds (can be used on show coat or pets) Plush Puppy blow-dry cream - is a styling cream for a luxurious soft silky coat and nice dematter. (can be used on show coat and pets) Plush Puppy Protein Coat Balm - is the perfect finishing cream, light and non-greasy and anti static. (used for show) Plush Puppy Reviva Coat - remarkable product designed to moisturise coats without leaving them greasy or feeling oily. This amazing formula really gets results. Brilliant for conditioning coats that cannot take a regular conditioner or need a totally non greasy conditioning. (can be used for show and pets) #1 All Systems Oblong Pin Brush with Wooden Handle A
small slicker brush - I only use it on puppies, this type of
brush should not be used on thin coated yorkies. If you have a thin
coated yorkie use a wide tooth metal comb. First of all never brush the hair while it is dry. This will break the hair. I use coat gloss or miracle coat and spray it on a Mason Pearson nylon brush. When I brush the hair I start from the ends and work upward toward the body. If I encounter any mats or knots I use a pin brush. I never rip through the hair and I treat mats or knots gently. Using my fingers I gently pick apart the mats or knots starting from the ends working my way up. The products I use to grow show coat is Plush Puppy. I explain the steps and procedures I do when using their products. 1. First of all I wash the yorkie with their Natural Conditioning Shampoo. It is recommended for dehydrated coats that require softening and shine and specially for flowing coated breeds. Suitable for dogs with most skin problems. Make sure to rinse the hair well after washing. 2. Then I use their Silk Protein Conditioner which is recommended for all coats that require softening or treatment for dehydration. It also reduces static electricity and it is suitable for dogs with most skin problems. Once I use the silk protein conditioner I make sure to rinse it out well also. 3. After I have did the steps above I then use either the Plush Puppy Seabreeze Oil or Neutrogena body Oil the light sesame formula. I use these products to wrap the hair and to help stop breakage. If you don't show and want your yorkies hair long then skip this part. If I use the Seabreeze Oil I mix to the directions. If I use the Neutrogena body Oil I take a eight ounce glass of warm water and add one capful of the Neutrogena body oil to it, once the yorkie has been bathed I slowly pour it all over the yorkies hair making sure not to get it in its eyes, nose and ears. Once the oil is on the hair I then wrap the yorkie in a towel to dampen the hair. I never ever rub the towel over the yorkies hair. Then I brush the hair while it is wet making sure there is no mats or knots and once I have went through all of the hair I blow dry the hair. I set the blow dryer on a warm (not to warm) setting and dry it until it is dry. I can not tell you how important it is to make sure the hair is dry once the oil is in the hair. If you do not dry it completely before wrapping the hair the hair will rot and will cause breakage. So make sure the hair is DRY before wrapping it! I would like to add that not all yorkies can be wrapped as not all coats are the same. Some people bath the dog first and dry the hair and then use a spray on oil before they wrap the hair. Each person has their ways of taking care of the hair.

| Many
people look in different states to buy a Yorkshire Terrier because
they can not find a yorkie puppy for sale in their state. Please get
to know the breeder before buying the yorkie puppy as there is a lot
of scam artists on the internet these days. Have the Yorkshire Terrier
breeder send you pictures of the puppy, and the contract, talk to
her/him on the phone and know what the total cost is including the
shipping before you buy. Many Yorkshire Terrier breeders will charge
you for the health certificate, crate, shipping and the cost of the
Yorkshire Terrier puppy. Once you have paid for your yorkie puppy
the breeder should stay in close contact with you until you receive
your puppy and then check in with you for awhile to see that they
puppy is doing ok. There are also Yorkshire Terrier breeders that
will not ship a puppy for one reason or another. |
| I
feel that a Yorkshire Terrier is the sweetest dog of all the breeds
and we are very dedicated to this breed. Trying to decide what breed
is the best breed one has to think of ones life style. Many people
like the Yorkshire Terrier because they are small and can take them
on trips, vacations, sneak them in stores in cute pet carrier bags
such as the Juicy Couture Pet Carrier. I think the Juicy Couture Pet
carrier is the most popular pet carrier because it looks like a purse
and is very fashionable. They are pricey but you can find them on
the Neiman Marcus website and they are on ebay auctions. |
| Everyone
has their preference of what sex they want. Most people like the females
because they think they are easier to potty train. This is not true.
Female Yorkshire Terriers are not always that sweet little girl that
you think they are. Females will mark like a male will, they will
hump like a male will and they also do the PMS thing also. Any exhibitor
will tell you that they would rather show a male yorkie any day before
a female yorkie. Why is this? Because females have their moods. One
day they will show well and the next day forget it because of their
mood swings. Female yorkies also will hold grudges or pick out one
certain person in the household to be their friend, pout and you name
it. |
| Again
everyone has their preference of what sex they want. Males stay playful,
they love to please you, kiss you, be with you, they don't hold grudges
and they are much easier to show than a female. Males will hump
if they are allowed to do so. A good thing about
a male is they will sniff before they will lift their leg. Females
are low to the floor and will pee without you knowing it because they
don't sniff like a male does. |
| Some
yorkies are easy to potty train and some are not. Some people like
them to go potty outside and some like to use pee pads. And some people
like to litter train them. Each person has to decide how they want
to train their yorkie. But I will be honest with you... training a
yorkie is not a easy thing to do with some. |
| This
is the worst reason why to breed a yorkie. One should only breed to
improve the breed and if one wants to show. Exhibitors breed Yorkshire
Terriers because they want to improve the breed and when they do breed
they are looking for that show dog in every litter. One should never
breed a Yorkshire Terrier just to have puppies for your kids or just
to have a litter or just for one time. |
| All
breeds of dogs have health issues. Here is a great site with information
about dogs and health. Vet
Surgery Central |
| Pure
silk yorkies will get leather ear, soft coated yorkies do not. Leather
ear does affect silky coated Yorkies. It can be caused from colder
weather and high humidity and can be responsible for hair loss on
the ears, hocks, and the end of the tail and leaves a slimy black
substance in those places. Some people think it is a fungus and some
think it is a "rabbit mite". What I use to help this problem
is #1 All Systems Tea Tree Oil. You can buy it from The
Show Dog Store. The #1 Systems Tea Tree Oil Tea Tree Oil is a
spray natural product which is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, antiseptic,
analgesic. Great for insect bites, hot-spots, fungus infections, cures
all type of sores. It contains a natural sovent which allows it to
be absorbed into the skin along with its healing properties. |
Yorkies
can be yappy if you let them. How can you stop the barking? I would
suggest putting pennies in a pop can and everytime the yorkie barks
when you don't want it to shake the can and say NO or stop in a firm
voice. But yorkies are a great little watch dog if you let them bark
when someone arrives or knocks at your door etc. |
| My vets feel that you should wait until your yorkie is at least six months of age. Some breeders spay/neuter their puppies as young as two to three months of age. I do not believe in this. I feel it is like taking the uterus out of a baby that is two months of age or cutting the testicles off a baby that is two months of age. When a yorkie gets spay/neutered at six months of age this is a good time to get any baby teeth removed as yorkies retain their baby teeth at times. |
| Just
this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow
Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. |
| The
Yorkie (Yorkshire Terrier) became a fashionable pet in the late Victorian
era in Yorkshire, England. It is said that they were bred from the
Manchester Terrier, Skye Terrier, Maltese, Paisley and Clydesdale
Terrier. Yorkshire Terriers made their appearance in the United States
in the early 1870s and today have become one of the most popular toy
breeds. There life span is 12 to 15 years. |
| Yorkshire
Terriers are Intelligent, confident, affectionate, lively, brave and
spirited. Some yorkies are to brave. One has to watch these types
of yorkies around other dogs because they think they are much bigger
than them and they could get hurt. |
| Sure
they are! They should be even tempered and co-exist peacefully with
other breeds. |
| Here
is a wonderful site to where you can read about breeding. After you
go through this site you may not want to think about breeding. This
site is one of many on the web that people should visit prior to breeding
their dogs. |
| These
are not quality Yorkies and do not meet the standard. Some breeders
claim these are rare Yorkies and sell them for a lot of money. I should hope they are very rare and that no one is breeding them because they are incorrect. |
